Tower Records Japan Phone Verification — Dedicated Japanese Number
If you tried to complete Tower Records phone verification from outside Japan and got blocked — your overseas number rejected, your VoIP service flagged, or the verification call never connecting — you are not alone. Since 28 May 2026, Tower Records Japan has required phone number verification for orders, Marketplace, in-store pickup, and live event pre-payment. The verification mechanism is voice call based, and Tower Records' own policy openly warns that overseas numbers are unreliable. This service provides a dedicated real Japanese mobile number and completes the verification for international users with a 100% success rate to date.
What Changed on 28 May 2026
On 26 February 2026, Tower Records Japan announced a new security policy: all account holders must complete phone number verification. The mandatory enforcement date was 28 May 2026. Since that date, any of the following activities require a verified phone number on the account:
- Placing online orders on tower.jp
- Buying or selling on Tower Records Marketplace (mpp.tower.jp)
- Reserving items for in-store pickup
- Pre-paying for live event tickets and venue reservations through member login — this is the category most K-pop, J-pop, Johnny's, and idol fans hit first, because limited live events open pre-payment well before the verification setup window
There is one exception: if you pay with Amazon Pay or log in via Amazon Login or dAccount, you can complete standard online shopping checkout without phone verification. However, this exception does not apply to Marketplace, in-store pickup, or live event pre-payment — those still require a verified phone number regardless of payment method. For limited-edition releases, Tower Records exclusives, and fan club pre-pay scenarios, phone verification is unavoidable.
Why Tower Records Verification Is Different
Most Japanese platforms — Mercari, SNKRDUNK, Pokémon Center Japan, eplus, Ticket PIA — use SMS verification: the platform sends a text message with a code, and the user enters it. Tower Records uses a different mechanism: voice call verification. The verification matches the registered phone number against an outgoing voice call from that same number. SMS verification methods do not work for Tower Records.
For users with a Japanese mobile or landline number registered on a major Japanese carrier (Docomo, SoftBank, KDDI au, Rakuten Mobile), this verification works straightforwardly. For international users without a Japanese number, the bottleneck is technical: there is no way to receive an SMS code that doesn't exist, and the voice call mechanism requires a real Japanese phone number — not a virtual one, not a forwarding service.
Why Overseas Numbers Don't Work Reliably
Tower Records' official policy page openly addresses this. The relevant passage (translated from Japanese):
"Overseas phone numbers can also be registered and authenticated, but as this involves international communication, call charges may apply. Furthermore, due to local communication conditions, 100% operation is not guaranteed."
In practice, the failure modes are consistent:
- 050 numbers are explicitly rejected. Japan IP phone numbers (050 prefix) — including most VoIP services routed through Japan — are blocked at the registration step.
- Voice call from overseas frequently fails. International routing to Japanese toll-free 0800 numbers is unreliable, and caller ID may not transmit correctly across international networks.
- Google Voice, Skype Number, TextNow, and similar virtual numbers fail verification. Even when registration appears to succeed, the voice call step does not produce a matching caller ID.
- Foreign mobile numbers depend on roaming and carrier agreements. Outbound calling from a foreign SIM to a Japanese 0800 number often does not connect, or connects but fails to verify.
Based on the verification cases handled since this requirement became mandatory, the only consistently working method is using a real Japanese mobile or landline number calling from inside Japan with proper caller ID transmission.
Who Needs This Service
This service is for users who fall into one or more of these situations:
- You bought (or want to buy) K-pop, J-pop, Visual Kei, Johnny's, idol, or anime music limited releases from Tower Records and got blocked at verification.
- You are trying to pre-pay for a Japan-only live event, fan meet, or limited venue reservation and need to complete member login phone verification first.
- You want to sell on Tower Records Marketplace (mpp.tower.jp) from outside Japan.
- You receive items through a Japan-based forwarding service (Buyee, Tenso, etc.) but still need a verified Tower Records account to place the order.
- You tried to verify with an overseas number or VoIP service and the call did not go through, or registration was rejected outright.
If you have access to a real, working Japanese mobile or landline number — through a Japan-resident friend, family, or your own Japan SIM — you can complete the verification yourself and do not need this service.
How This Service Works
- Place your order. Choose Standard or Express Verification (compare below). At checkout, share your Tower Records account email so we can coordinate timing.
- Receive your instructions. You will receive step-by-step guidance for completing the Tower Records verification using your dedicated Japanese number.
- Follow the instructions. Complete the verification step on your Tower Records account page following the guidance provided. The technical voice call requirements are handled on our end — you do not need a Japanese number or any special equipment yourself.
- Verification confirmed. Your Tower Records account becomes verified. The dedicated Japanese number is then retired from our service.
You never share your Tower Records password. The verification is completed without us accessing your account. You operate the Tower Records interface yourself.
Standard vs Express Verification
| Standard Verification | Express Verification | |
|---|---|---|
| Processing | Standard queue | Priority queue |
| Dedicated Japanese mobile number | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Real, non-VoIP carrier | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| 1-on-1 customer support | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Full refund if verification fails | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
Both tiers use the same real Japanese mobile number and the same verification procedure. The difference is order queue priority. Express is recommended for time-sensitive scenarios — for example, an upcoming live event pre-payment deadline, a limited K-pop or J-pop release on-sale window, or a fan club draw deadline. Standard is appropriate for non-urgent verifications. Express affects our handling priority only — it does not change Tower Records' own systems.
What This Service Does Not Cover
- This service covers the Tower Records phone verification step only. After your account is verified, all subsequent activity — placing orders, Marketplace transactions, payment, shipping internationally, accessing forwarding services, prize draws, and Tower Records' own policies — is your own account activity and outside the scope of this service.
- Tower Records verification is normally a one-time step per account. You will not need to re-verify under standard usage.
- The Japanese number used for your verification is dedicated to your order only and retired after completion. The number is not transferred to you.
- Tower Records' policies may change. This information reflects the policy as of 2026.
Refund Policy
If the Tower Records phone verification step cannot be completed using the number provided, a full refund is issued. Full terms: refund policy. Based on the verification outcomes observed to date, refunds have not been necessary — but the guarantee stands.
Other Japanese Platform Verifications
If you shop or transact across multiple Japanese platforms, dedicated verification numbers are available for:
- SNKRDUNK — for authenticated sneakers, streetwear, and Japan-exclusive trading cards.
- Entertainment & Fan Club Verifications — for J-pop, K-pop, idol fan clubs, and music subscription services.
- Japan Marketplace Verifications — Mercari and other Japan-domestic resale platforms.
- Japan Ticket Verifications — Ticket PIA, eplus, Lawson Ticket, and other live event ticketing systems.
- Browse all Japan platform verification services.
Each Japanese number is allocated to a single account on a single platform — please order separately for each platform you need to verify.
